What is Baking / Icing Spatulas used for?
A baking spatula or palette knife is a kitchen utensil designed especially for the use of spreading a substance onto a flat surface, such as frosting on a cake. It is also an ideal tool for applying spreads onto sandwiches in mass quantities. Once your cake is baked, you’ve got to apply the frosting somehow! For this delicious task, you’ll want to use what’s called a frosting spatula. This type of spatula looks almost like an artist’s palette knife: a flexible, thin metal blade with a handle. They come in a variety of sizes and can be used for folding in coloring to the frosting as well as spreading it on the finished cake.
There are two primary types of frosting spatula: offset and flat. Many bakers seem to prefer one type or another. The offset spatula’s blade is slightly bent so that it rests about 1/2 an inch below the handle. This can make the blade a bit more “nimble” in terms of covering hard to reach areas without the baker’s hand getting in the way.
